The Awesome Grip was invented by Douglas Lowry in 1998, and was patented in 2002. Doug traveled the world often as an entrepreneur, seeing people struggle with their manual wheelchairs through airports. Knowing that his mother also struggled with her wheelchair, he started asking wheelchair users what they didn't like about their chairs. They all said the same thing... "Do something about these rims!"

So, the Awesome Grip was born! Doug went through many versions before he came up with the idea of the closed-cell foam core, and his wife Brenda designed the fabric covers. The product you see today is made of durable materials: A closed cell foam core that is heat resistant, and water resistant. Fabric overs that easily attatch with hook-and-loop, are reversible and machine washable. This combination helps close the gap between the rim and the wheel, making maneuvering your chair safer. It increases the grip area with a soft yet firm surface to increase comfort and efficency, letting you grip the rim harder without fear of slipping.
